Some days you want edgy. Some days you want sexy. But you always want to look good. These spring trends do it. (By Katheryn Erickson)
In a world of face-altering contouring and more-ismore brows, it was refreshing to see the spring runways embracing makeup that can only be described as, well, pretty. The stronger stuff is still around, but sometimes “it feels fresh to be subtly polished, as opposed to doing a whole glammed-up vibe,” says makeup artist Romy Soleimani. “Plus, it never seems like you’re trying too hard.” So how to get that finished-but-not-too-done effect, including this soft, pink-all-over idea from Dior? Turn the page and choose your look.
The Double Rosé
At shows like Lanvin, Christian Dior (left), and Ryan Roche, models proved that rosy lids can be just as f lattering as pink lipstick. The key to wearing them together: “It’s all about gorgeous, creamy skin,” says Soleimani, who designed the makeup at Ryan Roche. First, “start with a great moisturizer,” and, instead of a full face of foundation, use concealer only around your nose and eyes and to cover spots. Then mix a nude-pink lipstick with concealer and use your ring finger to press it into your lids, patting extra onto lips as a delicate, baby-pink stain. “It’s a little nineties and raw—but the creaminess gives it a lush, romantic quality,” Soleimani says. To intensify the look, switch to powder shadow and copy the f lushed lips from Dior: Makeup artist Peter Philips layered the brand’s Addict Lip Glow Pomade, left (a tinted balm would work too), under a petal-hued lipstick. Finish with curled lashes and skip mascara.
The Glowy Bronze
You know the contour palette you bought but aren’t quite sure how to use? Try the deepest shade to re-create this ethereal look from Rodarte, below. “We wanted the girls to be breathtaking but in a simple way,” says makeup artist James Kaliardos. Start with a light layer of foundation and then brush the color onto your cheeks, temples, and upper lids, diffusing the shade toward the crease. “You’re emphasizing the eye but in a really soft way,” he says. Complete the effect by brushing up brows with clear eyebrow gel, then adding black mascara and a touch of toffee-toned lipstick. “You want to have something going on with your eyes, your lips, and your cheeks,” Kaliardos says. “When you’re doing subtle makeup, all of the details are really important.”
The Pop of Color
Every iteration of blue eye makeup—punk, statement, barely noticeable—made an appearance during spring fashion week. But the one we’re most into is the mermaid-esque smoky eye from Diane von Furstenberg, above. How to make it work on you? Pick one shade of shadow—whether it’s ice blue or aqua and “leave some skin showing underneath,” Kaliardos advises, so it doesn’t look too caked on. Not ready for a full-on blue eye? Use a bright liner, like the Chanel one at left, inside your waterline, and keep the rest of your face fresh with a BB cream, a tawny blush, and a clear lip balm. Finish with mascara. “That looks cool,” he says. And pretty too.
